Barbara Lawson McGhee named Savannah State University’s 2018 MEAC Distinguished Alumna

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Barbara Lawson McGhee has been named the Savannah State University MEAC Distinguished Alumna for 2018.McGhee is a 1966 graduate of Savannah State College (now Savannah State University) and is originally from Waycross, Ga. She currently resides in Savannah, Ga.  Mrs. McGhee retired in 1996 from the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System as a kindergarten, middle school, high school and adult education teacher.

McGhee served in numerous capacities in support of Savannah State University and the Savannah State University National Alumni Association (SSUNAA). To name a few, she was the Financial Secretary for the SSUNAA Savannah Chapter, chairman of the SSU Community Booster Club and served as the SSUNAA 2016 Honorary Homecoming Parade Marshal.

Currently, Mrs. McGhee holds the titles of Savannah State University National Alumni Association National Queen, President of the Savannah State University Community Booster Club, and is an active Diamond Life member of the SSUNAA.

She is considered by many as the “hardest working alumna” of Savannah State University due to her involvement in all aspects of the university. She is most known for her fierce support of Tiger athletes and carries her “de-fense signs” to all sporting events.

Mrs. McGhee will accept the MEAC Distinguished Alumni Award at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va. on Thursday, March 8, during half time at the 8 p.m. game.
