DUBLIN, Ga. — The Savannah State University National Alumni Association Dublin-Laurens Chapter held its 28th annual Scholarship Banquet on April 16. The afternoon banquet was held in the fellowship hall of the Washington Street Presbyterian Church. Dr. Cheryl D. Dozier, the president of Savannah State University, was the guest speaker and the Twiggs County High School Jazz Ensemble provided musical entertainment for the event. The highlight of the afternoon was the awarding of the 2016 Scholarship to Donovan Timmons, a Senior at Dublin High School.
Donovan, the son of Donald and MarQuita Timmons, received a $1,000.00 scholarship which was matched by Dr. Dozier to be used towards tuition and books. He is actively involved at his local high school and in the community and attends the Shady Grove Baptist Church.
Additional scholarships based on the students’ GPA and ranging from $1,000 to $2,000, were awarded to several students from Twiggs County and one student who will transfer from Middle Georgia State College to Savannah State University.
Representing Savannah State University at the event were Dr. Dozier and her husband, Arthur Dozier, Phillip Cole, the Director of Development at Savannah State University, and Shumara Carswell, a graduating Savannah State University senior. Lance Jones, the City Manager of Dublin, Ga., Latoya Brown, a 2014 Savannah State University alumna and a 2010 chapter scholarship recipient, and several members of the SSUNAA Baldwin and Jefferson County chapters were also in attendance as special invited guests.
