SAVANNAH, Ga. — Versie DuPont, a 1967 graduate of Savannah State College, died on Nov. 18, at Hospice Savannah after a battle with cancer. Funeral service were held on Tuesday, November 25 at St. John Baptist Church in Claxton, Ga.
A Diamond Life Member of the Savannah State University National Alumni Association, she served as the 2013-14 SSUNAA National Alumni Queen and in several capacities for SSUNAA Savannah Chapter including Financial Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and chair of the Hospitality Committee and Awards committees. Additionally, she was previously selected as the Savannah Chapter’s Homecoming Queen and as a National Attendant to Savannah State University National Alumni Queen. She also provided support to Savannah State University as an active member of the Savannah State University President’s Club and the Savannah State University Community Booster Club.
In addition to her support of Savannah State University, DuPont was active in the Savannah community and held a life memberships in the Georgia Retired Educators Association, NAACP, King Tisdell Cottage Foundation, Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, NCNW, Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.. She was a member of the Spencer E. White, Sr. Scholarship Committee of the Burean Association, the Evans County High School National Alumni Association, the Electa Chapter #1 Order of Eastern Stars, and the Liberty City Neighborhood Association.
A native of Claxton, Ga., DuPont graduated from Evans County High School and earned a Master of Science degree from Savannah State and Armstrong Atlantic State University. She taught for 36 years and retired in 2004 from Juliette Low Elementary School in Savannah.
